Nolte, Eugene Victor b. March 10, 1909, New Castle, Pennsylvania; Father Carl C. Nolte, mother Anna P. Nolte; No prior military service; High School education; Single; Organizer, Salesman and Clerk; CP August 1936, section secretary, Young Democratic League, Workers Alliance; Received Passport# 391109 on April 15, 1937 which listed his address as 707 Cumberland Avenue, New Castle, Pennsylvania; Sailed May 20, 1937 aboard the Berengaria; Arrived in Spain on May 30, 1937 aboard a boat; Trained with the Battalion of Instruction in Tarazona from June 2, 1937; Served with the XV BDE, Mackenzie-Papineau BN, Plana Mayor, as clerk, paymaster, and observer; Rank promoted to Sargento August 5, 1937 and to Teniente November 25, 1937; Served at Fuentes del Ebro, Teruel, Segura de los Baños, Retreats (Belchite, Gandesa), and the Ebro Offensive (Cruzada Ebro); During the Retreats he left the front between Belchite and Caspe with Honeycombe and lost the money he was responsible for; He was arrested in Barcelona and returned to the brigade, reduced to Soldado and served as observer and mapper, he continued to draw pay as Teniente due to bookkeeping error; In hospital from September 7 to 13, 1938 Parazona; Received a poor rating from brigade leadership but okay rating from battalion leadership; Returned to the US on December 15, 1938 aboard the Paris; d. February 24, 1986, Johnstown, Pennsylvania, buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania; Wife Pearl E. Hildebrand Nolte. [fiche ll. 30 states SIM deserter]
