Ashley contacted the State Department stating his brother took a train from New York to Montreal where sailed for France on June 18, 1937, brother requested to be advised whether his brother could be apprehended and returned to the US; Ashley went to sea at 17 and his mother Mrs. John W. Cartnell, who was living in Birmingham, Alabama signed his application.
