Carbonell; Bachelor’s Degree; Was attending the University of Madrid, 2nd year Medical student when the war broke out; Prior military service in the National Guard, 1932-34, 3 years, Rank SGT; Single; Student; CP 1937; Received Passport# 12436, Puerto Rican series, on July 2, 1934 which listed his address as 74 Carbonell Street, Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico; US address 1290 Fulton Avenue, NYC; Served in Militia in Spain in the early days of the Civil War with the Column Mangada in Guadarrama y Talavera de la Reina-Valle del Tajo, then joined the 5th Regiment as instructor of machine gun; Returned to the US in January 1937 aboard the Champlain then on to San Juan, Puerto Rico; Sailed July 24, 1937 aboard the Britannic; Arrived in Spain via Massanet on August 6, 1937; Served with the XV BDE, Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion, Co. 1; Rank Teniente; Served at Fuentes de Ebro, Teruel, Segura de los Baños, and The Retreats (Belchite); promoted to Captain before Ebro offensive; Killed in action September 9, 1938, Sierra Caballs, Ebro Offensive; Brother of Pablo and Victor Carbonell; Jorge and his brothers were recruited by Bill Susman, Jorge travelled from Puerto Rico to the US with Susman.
