January 31, 1917, Indianapolis, Indiana; Jewish; Romanian American; Father Louis Markowitz (1888-?), mother Rachael Larkowitz (1886); Single; Draftsman and Seaman; CP September 1937; Received Passport# 575370 on August 8, 1938 which listed his address as 73 Reed Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Arrived in Spain via Massanet on August 31, 1938; Served with the Lincoln-Washington BN, Co. 3; Killed in action September 7, 1938 (September 24, 1938), Sierra Caballs; Believed captured and executed. [1930 Federal Census. Lived at 1825 Linton Street, Pittsburg, PA. Father and Mother from Romania, Merkowitz, Louis and Rachel. Sam fifth of six children only boy. Sophie (1913), Bertha (1914), Clara (1915), & Pearl (1921); In August 1936 he was apprehended as a stowaway aboard the SS Scanyork and was transferred and returned to New York aboard the SS Minneque. Family name may have originally been Merkowitz or Merlsoroitz.]
